“I don't feel supported, and I feel burnt out,” teachers told us last year. As we head back to school, join us for a discussion about public school teachers’ and principals’ wellbeing and working conditions—and how to improve both. RAND’s State of the American Teacher and Principal Surveys asked teachers and principals to share their perspectives on teaching and leading through the pandemic, navigating politicized topics in their schools and classrooms, and supporting educator retention.
This webinar will address the challenges teachers and principals reported, and tangible strategies to improve their well-being and help them stay in their jobs. In particular, we explore the experiences of teachers of color and strategies to better support a racially diverse teacher workforce.
Featured Speakers
Elizabeth Steiner is an education policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. She directs the State of the American Teacher and State of the American Principal surveys.
Sy Doan is an associate policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. His research uses quantitative methods to study issues in K–12 education policy.
Ashley Woo is an assistant policy researcher at the RAND Corporation and a Ph.D. student at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. Prior to joining RAND, she was a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher.
Kamilah Drummond-Forrester
Kamilah Drummond-Forrester is a speaker, consultant and workshop presenter on topics of social and emotional learning, educational equity, anti-racism and self-care. Most recently, Drummond-Forrester was the director of Open Circle, a social and emotional learning program for children in elementary schools. She is a board member for the social and emotional learning advocacy organization SEL4MA and is a founding member and former Board President of the SEL Providers Association. Drummond-Forrester has a B.A. from Brandeis University in psychology and African American studies and a Masters and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) in vocational rehabilitation counseling from Assumption College.
Dr. Samuel Galloway
Dr. Samuel Galloway is the director of talent management at Bristol Public Schools, where he oversees all personnel-related issues for over 1,200 certified and non-certified employees. In 2018, Galloway was awarded the Outstanding School Administrator award by UCONN’s Neag School of Education. Prior to his current role, Galloway has worked as a state trooper, elementary teacher, middle school assistant principal, and high school turnaround principal. Galloway earned his doctorate in education and his superintendent certification from Central Connecticut State University and his 6th Year certification from the University of Connecticut. He also holds a M.A. in education and a B.S. in business economics from Southern Connecticut State University.
